Tacoma Narrows Bridge
          The original Narrows Bridge, a $6,500,000 suspension bridge was opened to traffic late in the summer of 1940. Just 130 days later, the bridge fell about 11 in the morning. Since the bridge had been finished, the winds through the narrows had been causing the span to undulate and wave so violently that it was nick-named "Galloping Gertie". On the day of the collapse, the wind was reported to be about 40 mph.
          Plans to rebuild a stronger and safer bridge that would withstand any winds that blew through the narrows were delayed by World War II.
          Finally, in April, '48 work started on a new span. The second Narrows Bridge, 5,979 feet long and costing $16,500,000

was opened to traffic October 14th, 1950, just a few days less than 10 years after "Galloping Gertie" had met her demise.
