Tacoma, the third largest city in the State of Washington is in the
midst of one of the most scenic locations in the Northwest. The view of the Cascade
mountain range and Mt. Rainier to the east, the Olympic Mountain Range to the west and a
sweeping view of Commence Bay, Vashon Island and Brown's Point to the north leaves little
to be desired.
Once called the "City of Destiny" in the late 1800's when it became
the western terminus of the first railroad to reach the Northwest, Tacoma, now a century
later is still living up to it's name. The past few years have seen a major downtown
restoration effort, a thriving theater district and an infusion of art galleries,
boutiques, restaurants and museums. |
Although a
modern metropolis, Tacoma is really a city of neighborhoods and historic districts.
Each district has a distinctly different flavor, often as a result of the various ethnic
or economic groups that first settled there. |
If you are
looking for antiques, be sure to stroll through Antique Row, next to the theater district
on Broadway. For waterfront dining, take a stroll
along Ruston Way near Old Town. For a pleasant, relaxing Sunday afternoon picnic,
choose from among the many parks located within the city.
o
Tacoma has many Business Districts, some of them Historical
Districts, and numerous shopping malls located in all areas of the city. No matter where
you are in Tacoma, you'll find shopping and entertainment just a few minutes away. |

Looking
north on Pacific Avenue at 21st Street toward the heart of downtown Tacoma, just North of
the Dome Historical District, shows a portion of downtown that has been in the
process of being renovated over the past several years. There are many unique shops and
boutiques in the four blocks to the left. To the right is the Tacoma Art Museum and
slightly beyond, Union Station. To the east of Union Station on Dock Street is the new
Museum of Glass. Located behind the Harmon Building is the downtown campus of the
University of Washington, Tacoma branch. |
