Founded in 1851 by Lafayette Balch, Steilacoom quickly became one of the busiest frontier seaports on Puget Sound. In 1854, it became the first incorporated town in Washington Territory.
The town boasts many "Firsts":
           First territorial jail,
           First Protestant Church north of the
                    Columbia River;

Saltwater beaches lie north and south of town, and a state of the art, 250 passenger ferry carries passengers and cars from the waterfront to Anderson and Ketron Islands and also provides for the debarkation point to the penitentiary located on McNeil Island.
