If you stand on
the brow of the hill overlooking McKinley Park and Commencement Bay to the
north and
close your eyes, you may be able to drift back in time and imagine a young
maiden standing near by, anxiously looking, and waiting, for the prow and
masts of a sailing vessel to appear around the spit of land in the
distance known as Brown's Point, knowing that soon her love would be coming
back to her, safe once again from the dangers of the sea. |
|

|
Times have
changed. No one stands on the hill awaiting the return from the sea of a loved one
anymore. They now spend their time together whiling away the quiet sunny
days in the park with a picnic lunch, or just over the hill meandering
through the shopping district.
From the mural on 34th Street
to Little Swifties Grocery on 43d, there are a variety of businesses to
browse while passing a few pleasant hours investigating the McKinley
District. |
|
If you're hungry and in the mood for Tacos or Tamales, you're in luck.
There's plenty of Mexican food on the avenue. Want to cook your own
Chinese? Stop by the Oriental Grocery store and fill up a grocery bag. On
a budget? Try the discount grocery store. |
|
The McKinley District also has the usual variety of shops necessary to
fill the needs of the neighborhood community. Barber shops and salons are
just up the street, and you can get the dings repaired and the cars motor
fixed just down the street. Rent a video, get a massage, dance at the
lounge, borrow a book from the library, have a beer or wine at
the tavern, a coffee at Fergies, rest awhile at the
memorial....... |

|
|
These are only a few of the things you can do on the
avenue.
