The city of Lakewood  is located ten miles southwest of the business and industrial center of Tacoma and bounded by Fort Lewis, McChord Air Force Base and Interstate Highway #5. The history of the area reaches back over 130 years, when the prairies with their abundance of game brought hunters, trappers and settlers to the local area. The first immigrants arrived by covered wagons over the Naches Pass in 1853. Lakewood as a district community began to evolve in the 30's and 40's and business development came quickly, and continues today.
      Lakewood officially became incorporated on February 28, 1996 making it the seventh largest city in the State of Washington.
