Downtown Tacoma is comprised
of many small districts and attractions. From "A" Street to Tacoma Avenue and
South 6th to South 27th Street, you'll find many traditional businesses large and small,
and a varied assortment of unique shops, boutiques, delis and coffee houses.
It is home to Antique Row around South 9th Street on Broadway with its many antique shops
having available just about anything one can imagine that has been gently used in times
past.
Just south of Antique Row, you'll find the Broadway Theatre
District. Within easy walking distance are the Pantages Theatre, the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts,
the Rialto Theatre, home of the Northwest
Sinfonietta, the Tacoma Youth Symphony, the Children's Museum of Tacoma, the
African American Museum and many more popular attractions. |
On Pacific
Avenue you will find the Tacoma
Art Museum at South 12th Street. The museum always has a variety of changing
exhibitions of 19th and 20th century art. Glass sculpture by Dale
Chihuly can always be found on view.
East of Pacific, on Dock Street along side Foss Waterway is
the Thea Foss Waterway Maritime Center. Here you can gain first-hand experience with
Tacoma's maritime heritage. You will find changing exhibits,demonstrations and
participatory programs for all ages. Excursions are available that combine history and
environmental issues. |

The Washington State History Museum is
further down Pacific Avenue at South 19th Street just south of Union Station. It features
interactive and multimedia exhibits highlighting the Native Americans, early explorers and
settlers who traveled to Washington in the 1800's. The museum is home to the largest
collection of pioneer, Native American and Alaskan artifacts on the Pacific Coast. Now
open, the Museum of Glass
on Dock Street will feature contemporary art and glass sculpture by world renowned artist
Dale Chihuly. |

area is also home to the University
of Washington, Tacoma Campus, as well as a variety of art galleries,
restaurants, boutiques and wine & gift shops and the soon to be new location of the
Tacoma Art Museum in 2002. |
