The Dome Business District, located to the south of downtown at the head of Commencement Bay is home to the Tacoma Dome, the world's largest wood-domed arena, 15 stories tall and 530 feet in diameter, designed as a multi-purpose sports, entertainment and exhibition facility holding up to 28,000 spectators and is the center piece of the Tacoma Dome business district. The district is composed mainly of industrial and commercial businesses with a few restaurants and services catering mainly to the workforce of the area. Unlike the other business districts within the city, residential areas are virtually non-existent. The district also hosts facilities of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Tacoma Eastern, and Tacoma Belt Railroads.
The Amtrak station having been built as a replacement for Union Station serves Tacoma with several trains daily, including the Coast Starlight, plus connections to the Empire Builder, several Talgo trains, the Sounder, and others.
The historic building now known as Freighthouse Square, was originally built and utilized by the Milwaukee-St. Paul railroad for off loading and temporary storage of goods needed by the growing city of Tacoma, and later, permanent storage and warehousing. It is now home to many boutiques, art and antiques shops, an international food court, and much more.

The city has designated Freighthouse Square as the terminus for the "Train to the Mountain" upon renovation of the existing railway. Located across the street from Freighthouse Square, the Tacoma Dome Station permanent commuter rail facility is one of eight stations to be built along the initial 40-mile Tacoma-to-Seattle Sounder line. Eventually, the system will be expanded to serve additional communities along the way between Lakewood to Everett. The Tacoma Dome Station is designed to accommodate Sounder commuter rail
and also link light rail, Pierce Transit buses and Intercity Transit. The permanent commuter rail platform will be located on the south side of Freighthouse Square. A pedestrian concourse through Freighthouse Square will connect commuters directly to the rail platform.
